Detox the Turkey Damage

Are the turkey and stuffing still bubbling in your gut? Did the baked rolls turn into muffin tops? If so, there is hope with CoreConnection's Urban Cleanse on Sunday, December 05, 2010 at the new Center For Green Urbanism on 3938 Benning Road NE.

The workshop is great for those new to the cleansing process and those familiar with detoxification. If the detox isn't your thing, then take Takeyah Young's yoga class on Tuesday at Spirit Wellness (6:30pm) which is guaranteed to burn off at least the leftovers.

Mind Right-Body Tight Promo

Anacostia Youth want to be healthy, active and environmentally aware. They just need a vehicle to get them there. This summer the H.E.A.T. Haven team put together a promo about fitness and youth in Historic Anacostia. The video was funded by the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative, produced by the Multi-Media Training Institute and stars four youth from Anacostia.

"Ghetto Granola" Getaway

I recently set out on a yoga journey through Southern California to explore my creative energy and soak up the sun, beach and surf.

My journey led me to a Compassionate Renegade aka Tazima Davis. Tazima previously taught yoga at ShaktiMindBody Studio in DC and recently set up shop in Santa Monica, CA. Tazima touts the title, "the best yoga instructor you've never met."

Tazima is a powerful instructor and focuses on building a solid yoga foundation first. We managed to squeeze in an amazing morning asana practice on Santa Monica Beach and a magical hike through Malibu.

Blocks away, I scheduled a class with Sean Corne at the superstar studio Exhale.

Then finished up with organic kimchee at a local restaurant Euphoria Loves Rawvolution "Conscious Food for Conscious People."

This yoga journey has given me candy sunsets at Ocean Beach, pranayama breathing on the cliffs of Malibu, meditations that match the rhythm of crashing waves, macrobiotic meals, and the open blue skies of the wild, wild west.

Blogging By the Beach

While tanning on the white sands of Ocean Beach, San Diego, I thought I'd share some of the cool vibes of this awesome little town.

Random signs encouraging poop free streets and beaches

No Whole Foods, No Starbucks, No Target. Yet, a "People's Organic."

Ocean Beach is also a very cannabis-friendly culture and has 3 medical dispensaries just blocks from the ocean. For breakfast, the town has cute coffee tiki bars and at night everyone goes to the bonfires to watch the sunsets. (more pics to come)

Unlike the other beaches in San Diego, Ocean Beach residents manage to keep their unique local business community alive with simple tiki bars, thrift stores, great mexican restaurants and an interesting sunny seaside community.

Yoga Review: Ricky Tran, The Urban Yogi

I just came back from a great yoga immersion with Ricky Tran at Stroga in Adams Morgan. Watching him suspend in midair, stand on is head and morph into a human lizard was incredible. But what I love about Ricky's style is his return to the yoga fundamentals- Breath, Asana and Meditation.

In an era of celebrity yoga instructors, overpriced classes and a largely upper class fitness trend, Ricky Tran is a refreshing breath of yogic air.

While grooving to hip hop beats, Ricky repeatedly spouted simple messages like,"Jesus practiced Bhakti Yoga through Devotion!", "Yoga should be fun!" and "Squeeze your anus." (mula banda). Basically to remind us of the fundamentals and the ultimate true goal of yoga- "To reduce suffering so that one can achieve true freedom."

Ricky Tran is one of the few self-described "Urban Yogis" that blends real life experience with the often difficult spiritual practice of yoga. Yoga needs more down to earth colorful yogis like Tran. He has the potential to get the word out to communities like Anacostia that yoga is for everyone and can drastically improve your mental, physical, spiritual and social well-being.

If you can catch his East Coast Tour or visit Dallas, Texas, you should check him out!

Get Your Mind Right & Body Tight on November 6, 2010

During the summer, youth from Historic Anacostia volunteered to star in a mini-short called "Mind Right and Body Tight" about health and nutrition for youth in Anacostia.

The kids were crazy, cute and committed to showing up to HEAT Haven every Saturday to work out, talk about nutrition and spread the word. Fitness instructors Amber Robles Gordon, Sean Smith and yours truly helped organize the program through funding from the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative.

We will showcase the "Mind Right and Body Tight" DVD at H.E.A.T. Haven's first fundraiser for youth fitness in Anacosita on Saturday November 6, 2010 from 2pm-4pm. Anacostia families will get a chance to meet the stars of the DVD and participate in some Fall Wellness Fun!
