Yoga Review: Get on the "Maat" at Spirit Wellness and Fitness

After enjoying the views of the Anacostia River from the treadmill at Spirit Anacostia Health and Wellness on MLK SE, I popped into an excellent yoga class with Dehejia Maat, yogini, creator and artist.

Dehejia's yoga style is very inviting and calming. She managed to teach a class for everyone ranging from a recovering stroke patient all the way to a former basketball player and first-time yogi. The class was a great way to stretch out my aching hamstrings while building enough bodyheat to keep me challenged.

The best part is that Deheija's class felt like a real yoga class, not just a place where people do stunts and make serious faces. She taught us some great breathing techniques to relieve stress and shared her personal journey with maintaining a balanced life.

Deheija's Saturday Morning Movement Yoga Class will definitely become a part of my regular yoga circuit.

Health Reform Starts with a Health Revolution

While watching an awesome movie about Ernesto "Che" Guevara, I realized the movie emphasized Che Guevara's medical practice was a key tactic in mobilizing the "peasants" to support the revolution.

What does this have to do with Southeast/River East or East of the River? Well, us peasants are also being asked to mobilize to support one of the most drastic health reform bills in the history of the United States. Obama's health plan aims to address uninsured Americans which may overwhelmingly affect communities like Southeast who have radically disproportionate rates of uninsured residents. One way to mobilize is by spreading factual information about health reform and getting involved in community efforts to make people invested in their overall community health.

The community organization River East Emerging Leaders will discuss building a Health and Wellness Committee for Wards 7 and 8. Warning! This is not about promoting or rejecting Health Reform but more about galvanizing ideas for reforming the spiritual mental, physical and emotional health of our Wards 7 and 8.

So come check out R.E.E.L. River East Emerging Leaders Health and Wellness Committee

Yoga for Big Bellies

The United Medical Center on Southern Avenue SE (formerly Greater Southeast Hospital) has an ongoing Beautiful Births workshop for mommies to be. The workshop sponsored by myhealthydc.com is a 6 week series that shares prenatal information with moms and dads living in southeast DC.

I stopped in this weekend, no I am not pregnant ;) to support Andrea Christie, an awesome prenatal yoga teacher, with the yoga class. The lovely ladies and their bellies managed to move into various yoga positions and the session closed with a great Q & A with one of the resident pediatricians.

The next session will be on Saturday, March 19, 2010 at 9:30am and is a great way to learn about the positive effects of yoga for families!
